Faith and the Meaning of Work For many Christians, faith is most visible in worship, prayer, family life, and service in the church. Yet a large part of ordinary life is spent working: leading, building, teaching, designing, caring, managing, creating, solving problems, and serving other people. A Christian understanding of work therefore asks more than, "What do I do for a living?" It also asks how faith shapes the way we approach responsibility, relationships, excellence, integrity, stewardship, and service. Work becomes one of the settings in which discipleship is practiced rather than a separate part of life that sits outside faith. Purpose Beyond Position Purpose should not be reduced to a job title, profession, or position. Roles change. Careers develop. Opportunities open and close. A deeper understanding of purpose helps a person consider how gifts, responsibilities, convictions, and opportunities can be used faithfully wherever that person is placed. This perspective changes the questions we bring to work. Instead of measuring work only by status or compensation, we can also ask whether our work is being done responsibly, whether it serves people well, whether our decisions reflect integrity, and whether our influence contributes to the good of the organizations and communities around us.
